Description

Moso bamboo is one of the main bamboo species in Taiwan, an evergreen perennials plant that grows up to 20 meter in height and 20 cm in diameter. Its trunk is straight with hallowed sections. Maso bamboo is elegant and beautiful, which trunks is widely used in different applications, such as for construction or bamboo art crafts, generating high economic interests and is widely among growers.
There is a touching story behind the name of Maso Bamboo. It was told that Maso from ancient time was searching for bamboo shoots in the bamboo forest since his sick mother in bed had the craze for eating bamboo shoot in the middle of winter. When he could not find any bamboo shoot and was crying out in the bamboo forest, Maso’s devotion to parents has moved the divinity by ordering the bamboo shoot to grow in winter. To commemorate this incident, the descendants named the bamboo shoot grow from winter time as Maxo bamboo.
Bamboo, pine and plum are praised highly in Chinese culture, known as the “three friends of vitality retention in winter.” The hallowed sections of the trunk are often used as metaphors for moderate and humble scholars or freedom seekers who are high and upright in characteristics. There were a considerable number of poetries praising bamboo throughout the histories. The “poetry” composed by Literati Su, Dong-Po from Northern Song Dynasty, “I can live without food but not bamboo” is one perfect example.
After searching for different types of woods, wkidea chose Maso bamboo as the environmental material representing the spirit of Taiwan as the iPhone shell. It is not only durable, green but also filled with cultural implications. Wkidea expects to pass on the beauty of Taiwan art crafts.
